Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed state commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' representatives met in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the agreement.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the morning session finished without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He added that the talks are "challenging and have still not deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the differences between the both parties.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies distribution
  • Future governance of the area

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home now and until every captive come back none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.

In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports 48 stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Research now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of the population desire the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and zone areas and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the night comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we check the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the bodies of several people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south, medical staff stated.
