Daughter of Previous South African President Zuma Refutes Terror-Related Allegations as Trial Starts
The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related accusations at the commencement of her court case in the coastal city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being tried over comments she posted on digital networks several years back during violent unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her dad.
A week of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
She has been alleged of fuelling this turmoil and is charged with charges of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.
Context of the Proceedings
The demonstrations were focused in the provinces of Gauteng and KZN and were triggered by the previous president's apprehension for disobeying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an investigation into accusations of impropriety while he was holding office.
The defendant has repeatedly rejected the charges against her, with her attorney previously describing the government's evidence as weak.
She has also consistently said the accusations against her were an bid to settle political disputes with her parent after he started his own political organization and ran against the ruling party.
Support and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related harassment" against the previous head of state and his kin.
A small number of backers from her party, the political party, turned up outside the judicial building, while her parent and other organization officials participated in the proceedings inside.
Her legal team has argued that the proof presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks compelling proof for a guilty verdict.
